Collective Worship at Temple Guiting Church of England School

Collective worship is an important part of life at Temple Guiting Church of England School. It brings us together as a community to pause, encounter, explore, reflect, respond and thrive.

Our Christian vision, Everyone to Thrive, is rooted in the words of Jesus:

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
John 10:10

We believe that Jesus calls us to a life that is full, purposeful and rooted in love. We want every child and adult in our school community to have opportunities to grow, flourish and thrive in every aspect of life, including spiritually.

Collective worship gives us time to be still, encounter the Christian faith, explore life's big questions and reflect on how we can live well with ourselves, one another and the world around us.

Worship is more than something we do or attend. It is an opportunity to nurture our spirit, deepen our understanding, explore meaning and purpose, and consider what it means to live life in all its fullness.

Our approach reflects the Church of England's understanding that collective worship should be inclusive, invitational and inspiring. We want worship to be meaningful, accessible and thought-provoking, offering everyone the opportunity to engage, reflect and grow, wherever they are on their own journey of faith and belief.

Our Christian Vision and Values

Our Christian vision shapes the purpose and direction of our worship. We want to be a community where everyone is valued, everyone belongs and everyone has opportunities to flourish.

Love is our overarching Christian value. It sits at the heart of our vision and shapes how we seek to live together.

Our six other Christian values are:

• Respect

• Courage

• Trust

• Forgiveness

• Perseverance

• Friendship

Through worship, we explore these values not simply as words to remember, but as ways of living out our faith in everyday life.

Our understanding of love is particularly rooted in 1 Corinthians 13, which describes love as patient and kind, and as something that protects, trusts, hopes and perseveres.

We encourage children and adults to consider:

• What does this mean for me?

• What might this mean for the way I treat others?

• How can I put this into action?

• How might this help me and others to thrive?

We want love to be more than a word. We want it to be seen, experienced and lived out through our relationships, choices and actions.

In this way, our Christian vision and values help us to build a community where everyone can thrive together in love.

Worship Throughout Our Week

Collective worship is woven into the rhythm of school life. It provides regular opportunities for our community to gather, encounter Christianity, reflect on our values and nurture spiritual development.

Whole-School Worship

We regularly gather as a whole school community. These times provide opportunities to worship together, hear God's word, explore our Christian values and learn from one another.

Our whole-school worship follows a familiar rhythm of Welcome, Encounter, Explore, Reflect, Respond, Thrive and Prayer. This structure helps us move beyond simply hearing a message towards considering what it means for us and how we might respond.

We are grateful for the contribution of our Spread the Word Worship Team, whose volunteers join us each Thursday to lead collective worship. Their involvement brings different voices and experiences into our worship and strengthens the relationship between our school, church and wider community.

Class Worship

Each Wednesday, worship takes place within individual classes.

These smaller gatherings give children space to share their thoughts, ask questions, listen to one another, wonder and reflect. They also provide opportunities for children who may feel less confident speaking in a larger group to contribute in a more familiar setting.

Class worship allows teachers to respond to the questions and experiences of their pupils and supports children in developing their own spiritual understanding.

Children record their worship experiences and reflections in their class Spiritual Journey Books. These books provide a developing record of the questions children have explored, their responses and the ways their thinking and spiritual understanding grow over time.

Our Worship Journey

Our worship follows a familiar rhythm that helps us move from encountering an idea or experience towards reflection, response and growth.

1. Welcome

We begin by creating a sense of welcome, belonging and togetherness. We gather as one school community and prepare ourselves to be present, still and ready to listen.

2. Encounter

We encounter something that invites us to think more deeply. This might be a Bible story, Christian teaching, music, prayer, an image, a real-life story, drama or a moment of stillness.

Through these experiences, we create opportunities to encounter God, explore faith and consider different ways of understanding the world.

3. Explore

We explore the theme, Bible story or Christian value together.

Children and adults are encouraged to ask questions, share ideas, make connections and consider their own experiences alongside those of others. We value thoughtful discussion and recognise that important questions do not always have simple answers.

4. Reflect

We create space to pause and think.

Children and adults have opportunities to consider what they have heard, what it might mean for them, what they believe and what they are still wondering about.

This quiet space is an important part of spiritual development. It allows us to listen to others and pay attention to our own thoughts, feelings and questions.

5. Respond

Worship invites a response. This might be through prayer, silence, music, discussion, creativity, an action or a personal commitment.

We encourage children to consider how their learning might influence their choices, relationships and actions beyond the worship itself.

6. Thrive

We connect our worship to our vision of Everyone to Thrive.

We consider how what we have encountered and explored might help us grow as individuals, strengthen our relationships, care for our world and develop spiritually.

We ask ourselves:

• How might this help me to thrive?

• How might this help someone else to thrive?

• How might we thrive together?

7. Prayer

Prayer provides a particular opportunity to pause and connect with God. We use a range of prayers, including traditional Christian prayers, prayers written by children and staff, and prayers connected to our worship themes.

Prayer gives us an opportunity to be still, give thanks, say sorry, ask for help, express our hopes and think about the needs of others.

We invite children and adults to pray, reflect or listen quietly. We recognise that people respond in different ways and seek to create a respectful space in which everyone can engage meaningfully.

Our school prayer reflects our desire to learn and live together in love:

“Lord, bless our school,
that working together and playing together,
we may learn to love and serve you and one another.
Amen.”

Through this journey, worship becomes an opportunity to encounter, think, respond and grow.

Growing Our Spirit

We believe spiritual development is an important part of helping everyone to thrive.

Just as children grow physically, intellectually, socially and emotionally, we believe their spiritual lives can also develop. Spirituality can involve wonder, stillness, questioning, reflection, prayer, relationships, gratitude and a sense of connection with ourselves, others, the world and, for many, God.

Our spiritual development ladder supports children in exploring age-appropriate questions across four areas.

Self

Who am I? What makes me special? What are my hopes, dreams and values? How can I grow?

Others

How should we treat one another? What does it mean to belong? How can our relationships help us to thrive?

The World

What can we learn from the world around us? What fills us with awe and wonder? How can we care for creation?

Beyond

What might we believe about God, faith, meaning, purpose and things we cannot always see or explain?

Children are encouraged to wonder, question, reflect and respond rather than simply search for a 'right' answer.

We recognise that spiritual development is personal and that our school community includes people with different beliefs and worldviews. Our worship is distinctively Christian, rooted in Jesus Christ and the Bible, while offering an inclusive and respectful space for everyone to engage and reflect.

Children as Active Participants in Worship

We believe children should be active participants in worship, rather than simply passive listeners.

Children contribute through reading, prayer, music, drama, questioning, reflection and leading parts of worship. They are encouraged to listen to one another, express their thoughts and experiences, and respond thoughtfully to the ideas of others.

Class worship is particularly important in giving children space and confidence to share their questions and reflections.

We want children to feel that their voices matter and that they can explore life's big questions in a safe, supportive environment. We encourage them to develop the confidence to ask questions about faith, meaning, purpose and themselves, including questions for which there may not be simple answers.

By involving children in worship and valuing their contributions, we support their growing independence, confidence and spiritual understanding.

Worship in Church at Special Times of the Year

As a Church of England school, our relationship with our local church is an important part of our worshipping life.

At significant times of the Christian year, we gather in church to mark and celebrate together. These include Harvest, Christmas and Easter, alongside other special occasions throughout the year.

We also come together for events such as our Shoebox Appeal, Pentecost and Leavers' Service.

These experiences help children understand that worship is not confined to the school hall. They connect our school life with the local church, the wider Christian community and the seasons of the Christian year.

Through these shared experiences, children can deepen their understanding of Christian traditions and recognise their place within a wider community.

Worship for Everyone

Collective worship is an important part of our identity as a Church of England school. It offers children and adults opportunities to encounter the Christian faith, reflect on their lives and consider how they might live out our Christian values more fully.

We seek to make worship inclusive, invitational and inspiring. This means welcoming people wherever they are on their journey of faith, inviting thoughtful engagement without assuming everyone holds the same beliefs, and providing experiences that encourage reflection, action and growth.

Our adults are encouraged to reflect not only on what worship might mean for the children, but also on their own lives, relationships, faith and sense of purpose. Spiritual growth does not stop when we become adults; we are all continually learning, questioning and growing.

Collective worship also provides an opportunity to strengthen our sense of community, deepen our relationships and reflect on our responsibilities towards others and the world around us.

Parents and carers who would like to discuss their child's participation in collective worship are welcome to speak with the Headteacher.

Collective Worship and SIAMS

The Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) considers how effectively a Church school lives out its Christian vision and how that vision makes a difference to the lives of pupils and adults.

At Temple Guiting, our vision of Everyone to Thrive shapes the purpose of our worship. We want worship to be more than a regular gathering: it should provide meaningful opportunities for spiritual growth, help children explore the Christian faith, encourage thoughtful reflection and inspire positive action.

Our approach supports this through:

• A clear Christian vision: worship is rooted in Jesus' promise of life in all its fullness and shaped by our Christian values.

• Spiritual development: children have regular opportunities to wonder, question, reflect, pray and explore meaning and purpose.

• Active participation: children contribute to worship, share their ideas and develop confidence in expressing their thoughts.

• Inclusion and belonging: worship welcomes different experiences and perspectives while remaining distinctly Christian.

• Living out our values: we encourage children and adults to put what they explore in worship into practice in their relationships, choices and everyday actions.

• A connected community: links with our local church, the Spread the Word Worship Team and families help connect worship with life beyond the school.

We continually reflect on how worship is experienced by our school community and how it contributes to our Christian vision. Our aim is to ensure that worship is purposeful, engaging and meaningful, enabling everyone to grow spiritually and flourish.

Everyone to Thrive

Ultimately, our worship seeks to help us become the community we aspire to be: a community where everyone is valued, everyone belongs, everyone has opportunities to grow and everyone is encouraged to thrive.

Rooted in the words of Jesus in John 10:10, we seek to nurture the whole person — mind, body, relationships and spirit — so that everyone has the opportunity to experience life in all its fullness.

Through worship, we make time to stop, listen, wonder, question, pray and reflect. We encounter the love of God and explore what it means to show that love to others. We learn from Jesus and from one another, reflect on who we are and who we might become, and consider how we can carry what we have learned into everyday life.

Our hope is that, through worship and the life of our school community, everyone will have the opportunity to grow, flourish spiritually and thrive together in love.
